Security In Difficult Scenarios
One obstacle to firefighters is having to rescue other firefighters.
This is especially true if they are trapped and have no means of egress, or they have no other access to another air supply. This disorientation can quickly deplete the available breathing air and may lead to panic - which only further leads to consuming more air and making irrational decisions. Because self-contained breathing units firefighters carry into burning buildings are heavy, bulky, and limited in capacity, an alternate air source can be the difference between life and death.
The air cylinder on a standard self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) lasts between 20 and 35 minutes while working. With two people breathing from one cylinder, the duration is cut to about 10 minutes – in half. Additional air cylinders may be relayed to firefighters needing more air, but this is difficult in a fire scenario, where so many things can go wrong. Debris may limit access and egress; navigation is often difficult with low visibility.
With a Lifeline Firehose, the risk of delay in removing the firefighter or replenishing them with additional air is mitigated thanks to the air supply integral to the hose. This new resource is a game changer and should be standard equipment for firefighters, first responders, and anyone else who relies on a continuous supply of breathable air.
Additional Uses of Lifeline Firehose and Equipment
In addition to its value as a reliable source of continuous breathable air, the Lifeline Firehose has ancillary uses as well. In situations where there is "immediate danger to life or health (IDLH), such as outside of a burning building or near a burning car, you can attach it to just your mask and leave the SCBA behind – while still avoiding exposure to carcinogens or hazmat. Firefighters need not carry the SCBA on their back to have access to breathable air from the Lifeline Firehose.
It may be used for non-firefighting situations, such as accessing a Confined spaces for inspection purposes or investigating a scene or environment where noxious fumes, gas, or air poses a threat to the person surmising the scene.
Plus, the air supply, which is integral to the hose they carry, may also be used to power pneumatic tools if necessary, without providing a dedicated supply of air to such tools and equipment.
All pertinent operations and deployment methods are regulated by the operating departments via their standard operating procedure (SOP). This may vary from one organization to another but may provide clear guidance of where and when it may be used. The Lifeline Firehose is easy to use.
Training in this equipment is minimal, as firefighters are already trained to use a standard firehose and to plug into an alternate source of air via the buddy breather.
